Call Summary St. Paul’s Square invites San Antonio area artists to submit their qualifications for a new mural on a wall located in historic St. Paul’s Square. The goal of this open call is to commission an artist to give life to a visual narrative that celebrates the area's unique heritage and community spirit. The artist’s objective will be to highlight the district’s rich history, culture, and entertainment legacy of St. Paul Square over the last century and create a mural to help tell its story through its imagery and story. This is an online application process only. Applications will not be accepted by postal mail or email. Artists may submit up to three (3) artworks from their portfolio (JPG or PDF) along with an artist bio (PDF) and should include their name and current contact information. A brief artist statement about their intention is optional. Required: • Biography: 1 page maximum • Resume: 1 page(s) (around 300 words) • Work examples: 1 - 3 (JPG ) Optional: • Artist Statement: 300 word maximum Artists are allowed to apply in teams. Initial submissions should include up to three examples of completed artwork. Artists applying as a team must split the allotted number of work examples between themselves. (i.e. if submitting as a team, the maximum number of submitted artworks is still three.) Artwork should be a high-quality image and original dimensions should be noted. Budget Description Selected artist will have the opportunity to create the inaugural mural in the new St. Paul's Square District Arts Initiative. Total project budget is $15,000 to cover all expenses for the artist(s). This includes materials, labor, and any other associated costs, creating an all-inclusive package. |

Project Description This mural will be a landmark piece in St. Paul Square, marking a significant step in revitalizing the district by paying homage to the local businesses, entertainment, and historical milestones that have defined the community over the decades. The mural will be the first of its kind in the district and will serve as a centerpiece for visitors and locals alike, reinforcing the area’s cultural importance. Ideally, the mural will serve as a nostalgic glimpse into the rich history of this beloved location and symbolize the district's cultural reintroduction and ongoing evolution, delighting locals and visitors alike. This new St. Paul’s Square mural will be colorful, reflect the history and potential of the site and should not feature any images that may be deemed offensive or any commercial brand references. The mural will measure 10.8 feet in height and 37 feet in length, near the corner of Hoefgen and Commerce Streets, making a bold statement as the district's first dedicated mural. This installation will be semi-permanent (3-5 years). Selection Criteria Qualifications submitted will be judged on the following criteria: • Artist is San Antonio-area resident • Artist has past work examples which: o are conceptually compelling and aesthetically excellent, preferably in color o create excitement and interest from the community o are inspired to participate by a personal story or connection to the subject matter Additional Terms: By submitting qualifications, applicant assures that artwork will be original and applicant will be able to install artwork in accordance with stated timeline. The St. Paul’s Square selection committee will reserve the right to approve the winning concepts for the mural. As producer of this open call, Centro San Antonio’s Art Everywhere Project has the discretion to disqualify artists whose applications are late or incomplete, and whose applications do not comply with all stated requirements. St. Paul’s Square reserves the right to select one, more than one, or no applicants in response to this opportunity. St. Paul’s Square reserves the right to accept or to reject any or all proposals received in response to this Open Call, and to waive informalities and irregularities in the proposals received. Full-length of the exhibition period will be reviewed by reviewed by the City of San Antonio. Centro San Antonio will undertake approval process for art installations designated for wall, coordinating with property owner. Once installed, the final artworks will become the property of St. Paul’s Square and may be relocated if possible and when deemed necessary. After the initial exhibition, the works may be relocated or duplicated for exhibition to another relevant site for public exhibition, with the written approval of the artist. |

Eligibility This opportunity is open to all professional artists, age 18 and up and residing in Bexar County, regardless of residence, race, color, religion, national origin, gender, military status, sexual orientation, marital status, or physical or mental disability. Limiting geographical eligibility to local artists underscores our commitment to showcasing and supporting the talent within our community. No prior mural or public art experience is necessary. |

Selection Information | ||
Selection Process A panel of community members and stakeholders will review eligible applications and select three (3) finalists for this project based on merit and experience. (artists may apply as a team; there is no limit on team members participation) but only one artist will be allowed to present on behalf of their team. Each of the three finalist/applicants will then present to a selection panel to determine the winning artist. Then, a single winning entry will then be selected and the artist(s) will have the opportunity to develop and install their proposed artwork. Selected artist(s) will install art in March 2025*. Winning artist(s) and their works will be celebrated in traditional and social media when the winning works are announced and when they debut. (*inclement weather will be taken into consideration.) |

Timeline Timeline The submission portal will close at 6 p.m. on January 24, 2025. Finalists will be selected January 31, 2025; the winning selection will be announced by February 10, 2025. Discussion regarding concept and execution plan will take place the following week; all works are projected to be installed by March 1 , 2025, weather and other conditions permitting. |
